Jagmeet Singh is a name that is becoming increasingly familiar in Canadian politics. Born in Scarborough, Ontario to immigrant parents from Punjab, India, Singh’s rise to prominence has been nothing short of remarkable. After graduating from Osgoode Hall Law School and practicing as a criminal defense lawyer, Singh made the decision to enter the political arena and run for office in the 2011 Ontario Provincial Election.
Despite not winning that initial race, Singh persisted and in 2015 he was elected as a Member of Parliament in the federal riding of Bramalea-Gore-Malton. In 2017, he made history by becoming the first person of South Asian descent to lead a major federal political party in Canada, when he was elected as the leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP). Since then, Jagmeet Singh has been making waves in Canadian politics with his progressive policies, charismatic personality, and commitment to social justice.
With a strong focus on issues such as affordable housing, climate change, and income inequality, Jagmeet Singh has quickly gained a following among young voters and has been labeled as a rising star in Canadian politics. He has also been praised for his inclusive and diverse approach, being the first federal party leader to wear a turban in the House of Commons and regularly advocating for Sikh and other marginalized communities.</p
